When Sarah Zubiate wanted to find a way to offer her family healthier, Latin-inspired foods that still paid homage to her Mexican-American heritage, she created a signature small-batch salsa based on her mom’s 60-year-old recipe. She expanded her lineup to feature plant-based, organic queso and crema and, since November 2019, has produced everything in-house at ZUBI Farms, a sustainable, certified-organic, zero-waste production facility and farm in Athens, Texas.
How to support: Purchase online or at a local Whole Foods, Central Market, and Costco.
Come for the impeccably crafted Latin-inspired food, stay for chef-owner Miriam Jimenez’ 6,000-watt smile and hospitality. She may be from the Dominican Republic, but she makes some killer Tex-Mex, too. (Her queso verde is one of the top quesos in the entire state of Texas, for rela.) It’s a great place to sip on a Spicy Pepinos cocktail (Tito’s vodka, fresh cucumber, citrus) while lounging on the patio and watching folks doing the same in Klyde Warren Park.
How to support: Reserve via OpenTable, call 214-855-5275 for take-out, or get delivery via DoorDash and Uber Eats.
Back in 2012, George Esquivel co-founded one of Dallas’ most popular breweries by infusing classic craft brewing techniques with his Mexican-American heritage. The beer comes in cans known for their colorful lotería-style artwork, jazzing up everything from the ever-popular Local Buzz Honey-Rye Golden Ale to the El Grito Lager. Even their website features a little bit of Spanglish, truly capturing the merging of cultures in everything they create.
How to support: Stop by the taproom for first come, first served seating or pick up beer to-go from various local retailers.
Founded in March 2020 when the world was literally falling apart, Ellen Hoffman opened the Movement Loft as a haven for stress relief through yoga, dance, and cardio classes. In addition to breaking a sweat, you can also visit the newly opened onsite apothecary, Hello Moon, or order their many products online.
How to support: Purchase classes or memberships online and shop for apothecary goods in-person or online.
For the record, it’s Beto & Son. As in one son, not many. In fact, the father-son duo of Beto and Julian Rodarte has become so successful in their Trinity Groves partnership with famed restaurateur Phil Romano that their location has widely expanded, quite possibly solely due to their famous liquid nitrogen margaritas and smothered totchos (nachos made with homemade tater tots, queso blanco, bacon, pico de gallo, and chile de arbol).
How to support: Call 469-249-8590 to reserve or order take-out via ChowNow.
Meat? Who needs it? Known equally for its tortas and loaded fries, you won’t miss animal protein one bit at this popular veggie-focused taqueria and bakery. The plant-based fillings are so flavorful and faithful to their sentient counterparts, that it’s pretty easy to fool any carnivore into devouring a platter before being told the delicious secret.
How to support: Dine in, call 972-807-2673 or order online for takeout, or order delivery from Uber Eats, DoorDash, or Postmates.
